La Liga newcomers Racing Santander have early this week announced an altogether exciting addition to the club’s first-team ranks.

This comes amid confirmation that Sergio Canales has returned to base in Cantabria after a full 16 years away.

The name of attacking midfielder Canales will of course be a familiar one to long-term viewers of Spanish football, with the veteran having previously spent time on the books of all of Real Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

The 35-year-old spent the last three years of his storied career plying his trade in Mexico, racking up almost 100 league appearances in the colours of Rayados.

As alluded to above, though, on Monday, Canales has returned ‘home’.

After enjoying his breakout all the way back in 2008 with Racing Santander, the 11-time capped Spanish international has linked back up with the newly-promoted outfit as a free agent.

As per a statement across Racing’s social media platforms, Canales has rejoined the club on a two-year contract:

‘Sergio Canales is Racing’s first signing for the 2026/27 LaLiga EA Sports season. The midfielder from Santander, who came up through the ranks at the Nando Yosu training facilities, returns home after 16 years.’
